Laste: a spectacular gem
Laste is a little gem of a village in the municipality of Rocca Pietore, nestling in a spectacular setting with marvellous views of the Civetta and Pelmo.
Laste spreads out over the eastern side of Monte Migón, sloping gently down from the 2384 m of the peak to the 1000 m of the bed of the Cordevole Torrent, with most of the village’s inhabitants living at an altitude of between 1200 and 1500 m. The exception is the neighbourhood of Saviner di Laste, which sits on the valley bottom.
Once much more populous and now a little jewel for a chosen few, this is a place where peace and quiet reign supreme all year round. Perched on the hillside is the village church, built in 1863 and dedicated to San Gottardo.
This is a popular destination with hikers, who enjoy exploring an area that was the scene of wartime clashes. Some of the most interesting options are the Col da Daut and Col Toront route, religious-themed routes such as the Cammino delle Dolomiti (Stage 11) and superb nature walks such as Col de la Casiera - Crepe Rosse, while at Sass de Ròcia, climbing fans will find a cliff with a number of routes ranging in difficulty level from 5a to 8b+.
And for those seeking to try out a via ferrata equipped route for the first time, a great beginners’ option is the Sass de Ròcia mini-ferrata.
